Spanish Immersion in Lake Atitlan
Things to do in Guatemaya Spanish School
Our school offers extra-curricular activities on a regular basis to give our students a chance to explore the local culture and practice speaking Spanish in different environments.
Guatemayan Hiking
Hiking for everyone, this activity is special because we explore the area surrounding the San Pedro Volcano, through trails that have been used by the locals for 500 years, even before the town of San Pedro was founded. During this activity we can appreciate the beautiful passages of one of the most breath-taking lakes in the world, Lake Atitlan. We also get a chance to appreciate the biodiversity that is located in this zone, the ecosystem and of course we’ll visit where our grandfathers produce corn, a system that goes back to our Mayan ancestors throughout the Mesoamerican region to date.
Finally, we will visit coffee farms, an agricultural activity more recent to the Lake Atitlan region, nevertheless in this activity we will find a mix of culture and technology in the process of production. This region produces some of the best coffees in the world, as the altitude above seas level and the volcanic soils are optimal for growing these coffee crops.
Textiles
Guatemala is the heart of the Mayan world. One of the school’s activities will take you to a non-profit organization where you will learn about the vibrant colors and fabrics of our grandmothers. Weaving is a vital part of life in our indigenous communities throughout this beautiful country. In this activity, we will see, share, and participate in the incredible textile processes practiced by our grandmothers for generations. We will appreciate how natural colors are extracted from various native plants, insects, and vegetables found in Guatemala and Mesoamerica.
Each fabric symbolizes the connection between the cosmos and our planet, the rhythm of our hearts, and the ancestral mathematics woven into each design. This process yields beautiful garments like blouses and skirts, reflecting our art, biodiversity, spirituality, and the way of life in our communities.
Artisan Chocolate Process
Cocoa holds a special place in our Mayan culture, valued not only for its remarkable properties but also because our ancestors consumed it for energy during long journeys and strenuous work. It brought joy to their hearts and served as currency for bartering.
Today, it is still offered in Mayan ceremonies for the day/symbol (nawal) of energy according to our Mayan calendar. This offering honors our ancestors and loved ones who have passed into another dimension. We place cocoa beans in the sacred fire as a heartfelt gift, allowing their aroma and smoke to nourish both our lives and the spirits of those no longer with us.
Mayan Art
Discover your Mayan Nawal (symbol) according to the day of your birth, month and year. Immerse yourself in the Mayan world through our calendar and learn more about our ancient culture, ancestral knowledge, spirituality and the worldview of our Mayan communities.
